JW Marriott Jeju Resort Opens in South Korea

Jeju-do is a destination to visit before the world discovers it. A rustic, historic island that thrives in the southern waters of mainland South Korea, its charms derive from kilometers of beautiful beaches and orange groves.

This tiny island has been called the “Hawai’i of Korea” by people that have clearly never been there. As a former resident, I can attest that Jeju is freezing in the winter — and don’t get me started on monsoon season.

A trip down south for this paradise is well worth it, though — especially for a stay at JW Marriott Jeju, a new island property set in the southern city of Seogwipo-si.

As someone who’s also completed the 26 Olle hikes around Jeju Island in its entirety, this is one of the most scenic areas on the island. Seogwipo has more small-town charms than its neighboring city of Jeju-si, and a harmonious resort is the icing on the honey toast cake.

Vice President and Global Brand Leader of JW Marriott Bruce Rohr notes the seamless connection between aesthetics and nature.

“JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa is an architectural masterpiece that exists in harmonious balance with its natural surroundings,” he said in a recent press release, “and we are confident that this new opening will set a new benchmark for luxury resort offerings in the country.”

The island’s volcanic nature serves as the inspiration for designer Bill Bensley. Marriott Jeju faces out towards the ocean, its structure perched on a lush mountainside bordering Olle Trail 7. Nearly 200 rooms with 28 suites feature some tried-and-true Jeju aesthetics. Neutral tones with black and white accents create serene environments throughout the rooms and roves.

Luxury and Authentic Experiences

Tech, luxury and a niche breed of island getaway makes Jeju the ideal setting for its latest hospitality haven.

“JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa is setting new benchmarks in modern resort design and service with luxury amenities, signature programming, and immersive experiences that will showcase the finest of Jeju to visitors,” said Douglas Kim, General Manager JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa. “We look forward to welcoming our guests to find nourishment in mind, body and spirit in one of South Korea’s most beautiful holiday destinations.”

Drinking Culture

Here’s the tea — the resort offers special tea ceremonies. Green tea leaves are a major crop on Jeju, with brands like Innisfree sourcing ingredients from the mineral-rich landscape. I expect that the selections at JW Marriott Jeju are excellent.

Furthering Jeju’s blossoming coffee culture is The Lounge, serving specialty coffees and high teas courtesy of its coffee sommelier. The Lounge will serve locally sourced delicacies, including green barley treats from nearby Gapado and peanuts from Udo, two micro-islands that border Jeju.

Wine tastings — and more interesting still, wine art classes — are available as exclusive excursions.

A Rainbow of Exploration

Jeju’s celebration of its flora and fauna is on full display at its luxury JW Marriott resort.

Inside, the JW Garden and Serene Spaces are designed to achieve peak relaxation and peace.

Off the property, the island is awash with UNESCO World Heritage sites. Structures like Seongsan Ilchulbong — otherwise known as Sunrise Peak for its east-facing ascendance — bring visitors from all over Asia. Other eexcursions can include the whistling Gotjawal Forest on Olle trail 14-1 and glorious expanse of Jungmun Beach.

Don’t forget about the family excursions. Planned trips around the island are a perfect activity for families with children, particularly the Jeju Forest Adventurers outings. Kids can enjoy the freedom of nearby forests with safe guidance.
